Of all the songs I've written since joining the Society for Creative Anachronism back in 1981, this one has been one of the most popular - and one of the least performed. At 16 minutes long, my poor voice and fingers could barely stand the chore (especially with campfire smoke in my eyes most of the time).

It's a tale of a heroic soldier, a dead elf, and a wicked mercenary, told in 72 verses with occasional musical interludes. (For those fans of mine with the Beggar Baron's Ballad's set, this will be a good upgrade for the set.)

With the advent of automated composition, digitally sythesized accompaniment, and the really bad quality of the old recording, I took it upon myself to do the whole thing over.
